Many news outlets, including The Wrap, indicate that the CW Network is about to be sold. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global are on the verge of selling the majority stake in the flailing network. The new owner...NEXSTAR.

Nexstar is nearing a deal to acquire 75% of The CW, with parent companies Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery each retaining 12.5% ownership stakes, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Nexstar happens to own some CW stations...notably KTLA in Los Angeles and WPIX in New York. In essence this deal would make the two stations the flagship stations of the CW. Not that it would mean much because....

Nexstar is expected to assume a majority of The CW’s current losses, which could amount to more than $100 million, per the outlet.

The days of Dare to Defy are certainly over.

I think they've already dropped that catch phrase from their promotion.

True, they dropped it just about when COVID hit but the spirit was still there and with the new ownership it completely gone.

This was the 2020 midsession promo that came out in February 2020.

We’ll never see something like this on network TV again and that’s kinda sad.

If this deal comes to pass, I wish them well as they will likely need it to navigate the choppy waters of niche fandoms, shifting viewing habits / media consumption, and a rapidly changing demographic landscape.

I think the "niche fandom" era of The CW will be over. As the article states, Nexstar is a major affiliate owner, which implies to me that they're going to be focusing on making the actual broadcast operation profitable. WB and CBS didn't care about that so much; they used the network as a showcase for various shows they could peddle to overseas buyers. But reorienting towards people who actually watch the broadcast channels (i.e., olds like me) means they're going to have to pivot towards much more broad-based programming, rather than shows that only get 300,000 viewers.

Got an update on the CW and Nexstar

Fox Business reports...

Nexstar Media Group announced Monday it would obtain a 75% ownership stake of The CW television network from Warner Bros Discovery and Paramount.

But here comes the kicker in all of this.

During a conference call with investors...

Nexstar president Tom Carter added that the CW would shift its programming from a teen and young adult audience to make it more appealing to an older demographic. Moreover, executives at Nexstar said they plan on making the network profitable by 2025.

Usually aiming for an older audience is a major risk, especially since the CW hasn't shown a profit in like never. But the older demos do have more disposable income.

The older audience equals more court shows, talk shows and reality TV with maybe a law or medical drama for scripted content.Basically The CW as we know it is coming to an end.Much like Supergirl,it's probably for the best The Flash is ending this way, under its own power with a final season because if they tried for a season 10,I don't think they would get it.I could even see Superman & Lois and Stargirl ending after their upcoming seasons. Also Gotham Knights being a one and done season.

I think whatever the combined HBO Max/Discovery + new streaming service next year will be,will the home of more genre stuff like DC T. V. shows. but probably not as many shows
